Friday, February 13th, 2009

One of the bedding materials that have gained immense popularity is memory foam. It is used in manufacture of the mattress and mattress pad. Memory foam is a polyurethane material resembling a gel and can retain the impressions left on its surface. It first found use in the hospitals to treat the pressure sores in the patients confined to bed. The first memory foam mattress pad was introduced for non-hospital use in 1990. It became highly popular amongst the common people and made the companies realize the potential of the material. The companies have introduced cheaper versions in the market, making memory foam popular across all sections of the society.

The primary advantage of memory foam mattress pad is comfort and support provided at a far lower price than that of memory foam mattress. You position the mattress pad on your bed, especially the one having the sturdiest support. To break in the pad, sleep directly above the foam, instead of the cover sheet. This will hasten the process of breaking in and should be done slowly over a period of time.

In spite of the proper outlet for air circulation, memory foam can become hot. This makes it difficult to sleep. To prevent this, sleep on the mattress pad without the cover sheet. This will lower the temperature greatly. Reducing the room temperature will also help.

If you find the mattress very stiff when the temperature in your room is less than 65, warm up the memory foam mattress by using an electric blanket before sleeping. Cover up the memory foam mattress pad to protect it from stains and dirt. This will keep you mattress pad clean and increase its lifespan.
